    Description

    William Millerism Millerites Second Advent of Jesus Christ 1842 old Newspaper
    Offered is an original, historic, & collectible old newspaper: NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, March 18, 1843
    * William Millerites - Millerism
    The back page has a report headed: "Millerism" which is about the Millerites, followers of the teachings of William Miller, who in 1831 first shared publicly his belief that the Second Advent of Jesus Christ would occur in roughly the year 1843–1844. Coming during the Second Great Awakening, his beliefs were taken as predictions, spread widely, and believed by many, leading to the Great Disappointment.
    The article notes part:
    "...that
    eleven insane persons have been committed to the state hospital in Worcester for derangement, represented by their friends as resulting from attendance on the lectures of rthe Miller sect, and a deep interest in his theories and doctrines...that no less than four maniacs were brought to the hospital in that place, last week, from one town at the east, who were made insane by the Miller doctrine..."
    with more.
    Millerite reports are rarely found in period newspapers.
    Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, very nice condition.
    As noted in Wikipedia, this title:
    "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."

    Historical reports may be beautiful or ugly, but they are always informative. While we rejoice in the beautiful (heroic, discovery, amazing feats, etc.), we at History's Newsstand also offer "the ugly" for we are determined to learn from the wrongs of the past - understanding, to do so, we must be willing to look these wrongs directly in the face and shout "NO MORE!". It is for this reason many Black Americans collect historic slave ads, Jews collect reports regarding the Holocaust, women collect coverage of the Women's Suffrage Movement, etc.. If you find any to be offensive, we agree! Hopefully this is an indication we are moving in the right direction.
