    Description

    U.S.S. OREGON Wood Relic
An actual piece of this historic battleship!
Commissioned in 1896 and built in San Francisco, the U.S.S. Oregon, battleship BB-3, initially served as the only U.S. battleship in the Pacific.
With the pending outbreak of the Spanish-American War, the
    Indiana
-class battleship was ordered to assist with the Atlantic fleet in the area of Cuba. She made an epic journey around the tip of South America, completing the trip of 14,000 miles in just 66 days. This feat earned her the name of
    McKinley’s Bulldog.
More importantly, it convinced the U.S. of a real need for a shorter canal route through Panama. On July 3, 1898 she played a pivotal role in the Battle of Santiago, helping to end the war quickly.
At the close of 1898 the U.S.S. Oregon was again sent to the Pacific to serve in the Philippine-American War and the Boxer Rebellion in China. After that intense period she saw little action and was placed on reserve status until WWI. During that war she protected the Pacific coast and served to protect transport ships in the area. At the close of WWI, after a distinguished career, the U.S.S. Oregon was decommissioned a final time in 1919.
In 1925 she was loaned to the state of Oregon and began her new life as a popular floating museum and monument. In 1942 she was removed from the Naval Vessel Register and sold as scrap for the war effort. Small pieces of her wood interior were removed and used as an incentive for selling U.S. War Bonds. The small wood relic attached to the front of the display is from one of those original pieces.
Now you have an opportunity to own an original relic from this historic U.S. battleship!
The actual piece of wood is mounted on a 5 x 7 inch descriptive COA display that can be easily framed. Each piece of wood will vary slightly depending on how it was cut from the original larger piece. The display is protected by a stiff plastic protector. The display’s front image is an early view of the U.S.S. Oregon with the wood mounted above. The back has a brief history of the ship, showing several early images.
This would look great matted and framed and would make a very special gift for anyone interested in Spanish-American or WWI Naval history!
International shipping is based on location.
