    Description

An archive of five letters, all dated 1907, regarding ethnological projects conducted by the Smithsonian Institution. Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian is a government-sponsored organization of museums and research institutions based in Washington D.C. Included are two autograph letters and one typed letter signed “
    Walter Hough
”. Hough (1859-1935) was an ethnologist and curator at the U.S. National Museum (the original name of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History). A further two letters, also dated in 1907, are addressed to Hough or refer to him. Three of the five letters are on “
Smithsonian Institution United States National Museum
” letterhead. One letter is addressed to Smithsonian scientist
    Richard Rathbun
(1852-1918), who was then the museum’s assistant secretary. Two are addressed to noted scientist, scholar, and former museum curator
    William Henry Holmes
(1846-1933), who wrote and signed a short reply to Hough on the top margin of one letter. Several also include the signature of Smithsonian curator and ethnologist
    Otis Tufton Mason
    (1838-1908). #D2
