Abstracts of Ocoee District Early Land Records - Entries
Author:
Lucille McClure
Description:
This 125 page book has two maps and describes how the Ocoee Land Office was opened on the first Monday of October 1838 to sell the land formerly owned by the Cherokee Indians prior to their removal to the western lands. The lands are in present day Hamilton, Bradley, Marion, Polk, and parts of McMinn and Monroe Counties in southeastern Tennessee. This is one of the few tracts in Tennessee set upon the one square mile basis and land was sold in lots. Many of the tracts were bought by occupants who were the white men living there prior to the removal of the Indians. This is one of the most important books on the early development of these counties for the genealogist and historian.
